2011 Project Description:
The problem: Independent peer-reviewed science regarding the fire safety, environmental and health effects of flame retardants is not accessible to the business community including manufacturers, dealers, and retailers.
Using an innovative educational strategy of transformative workshops conducted with manufacturers, dealers and retailers of products containing flame retardants, we will:
(1) reduce the amount of flame retardant chemicals entering the environment by encouraging movement to safer products and providing consumer choice
(2) recruit companies as strong advocates for policy change around flame retardants, bringing in a voice from the business community and strengthening the case for policy reform with bi-partisan support
After participation in a GSP workshop, the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association (BIFMA) issued a position paper stating: “…BIFMA strongly supports the elimination of fire retardant chemicals of concern in all manufactured products.”
