CTV News: Soap and water as effective as antimicrobial products, says new statement


A new statement from more than 200 scientists and medical professionals concludes that antimicrobial or antibacterial soaps do not provide any extra health benefits, and could be causing more harm than good to both consumer and the environment.

The news comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced last year that 19 antimicrobial chemicals, including triclosan and triclocarban, were not effective and should not be used in over-the-counter consumer hygiene products.

However, the scientists behind the new report say the FDA’s decision does not go far enough.
